This catalog is designed to help communities plan and implement efforts that prevent juvenile delinquency and violence and that are tailored to local resources and needs.
Abstract
The manual explains the general principles of crime prevention planning and details a planning process that can be used by anyone seeking to develop a comprehensive crime prevention strategy. The case of a hypothetical urban community is provided as a model, and a planning diagram outlines an ideal planning process. The manual's second section describes 50 Federal crime prevention programs and provides information on how these programs can help communities answer the basic planning questions. The programs are designed to help local planners develop effective crime prevention strategies by providing information, technical assistance, and funding. The guidelines emphasize the need to address all levels of the juvenile delinquency problem, including early prevention, intervention, suppression by means of consistent and appropriate punishment of offenders, and reintegration of delinquents. Program descriptions and contact information; tables; photographs; and appended lists of Federal resource centers and clearinghouses, related Federal publications, terminology, and program and agency abbreviations
