The book is divided into five parts. Part 1, Concepts, Definitions, and Links to the Past, presents the basic concepts that must be understood in order to study juvenile delinquency. It also traces the history of problem children, parenting, and children's law. Part 2, Measuring Delinquency, examines popular ways to measure the extent of juvenile delinquency. Part 3, Explaining Delinquency, presents theories that attempt to determine what causes delinquency and what kinds of children become delinquent. Part 4, Delinquency and Social Organization, looks at social units most closely involved in preventing, controlling, and, ironically, causing juvenile delinquency. Part 5. Prevention and Correction of Delinquency, examines community-based programs designed to prevent and correct juvenile delinquency, and incarceration and parole of juveniles.
