This document describes and evaluates a camp in Florida that exposes students from varied backgrounds to a multicultural atmosphere promoting justice, harmony, understanding, and cooperation among diverse racial, religious, and ethnic groups.
Abstract
The National Conference (founded as The National Conference of Christians and Jews) began Anytown Camps more than 40 years ago to foster understanding and cooperation among students from diverse backgrounds. At present, more than 40 one-week Anytown Camps are conducted each year. Students in grades 9 through 11 are selected based on their cultural, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, leadership potential, and expressed desire to learn about other cultures, to live in peace with others, and to change the world in which they live. Delegates are allowed to participate in the program only once, unless they exhibit a desire and have potential to return as counselors. This document describes: (1) camp staff members and their responsibilities; (2) a typical day at the Camp; (3) workshops and group discussion sessions; and (4) review sessions for advisors and counselors. Although camp formats are all the same, each one is unique because the delegates and staff bring different experiences to camp. Alumni from all sessions are encouraged to attend reunions and monthly support groups. Photographs
