This chapter presents narrative and statistical information on the operation of probation supervision in 11 countries throughout the world.
Abstract
The countries for which information is provided are Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia), Canada, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sweden, England and Wales, and Scotland. The information provided addresses eligibility for probation, the duration of probation orders, and levels and trends in the use of probation orders. One table presents information on the minimum age below which offenders are ineligible for a probation order. Another table shows whether countries use probation orders for minor, medium, and serious crimes. A third table presents the minimum and maximum lengths of probation order in each country. For most of the countries, the maximum length of probation orders is from 3 years to 6 years. The table that shows the levels and trends in the use of adult probation indicates that the number of probation orders for adults have increased consistently in Hungary, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, England, and Wales. The trend for other countries is fairly stable, with the exception of Japan, which shows a decline. The concluding section of the chapter discusses the conditions or requirements applied to probation orders, as well as the sanctions that are available for probation violations. 4 tables and 1 figure
