Urban Profiles in Prevention: A Descriptive Summary of Prevention Programs in Urban School Districts in the Western Region

This document highlights the drug prevention accomplishments of metropolitan urban districts in the nine western States served by the Western Regional Center for Drug-Free Schools and Communities.
Abstract
Each program summary focuses on the district's drug prevention initiatives, collaborative efforts with other agencies and community-based organizations, successful strategies, and methods of evaluation. Many of these districts have developed policies that address school staff as well as students, train administrators to recognize alcohol and other drug abuse as a public health issue, and emphasize staff assistance rather than focus on punitive measures. The document suggests the formation of regional urban district networks that would allow agencies to share ideas and common agendas, develop a focus on urban district strategies, devise methods for collaboration among districts, and disseminate information.
