This document reviews the current knowledge about alcohol and other drug use and prevention among people with developmental, learning, hearing, visual, and mobility disabilities.
Abstract
The first section of the review addresses the limits of the research-based information that is available. The second section focuses on the nature and extent of the problem, discussing substance abuse as a disability in and of itself, disability prevalence estimates, and specific characteristics of alcohol and other drug use among people with varying impairments. The third section examines correlates of alcohol and other drug use among people with different types of disability. The final section covers prevention and intervention issues, describing both general and group-specific needs. The document includes abstracts of relevant research articles and studies. 160 references and 3 appendixes
