This book is based on observations of the High-Risk Youth Demonstration Grant Program, designed to develop and evaluate alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use prevention efforts targeting youth at risk.
Abstract
Since the program's inception in 1986, more than 330 demonstration programs have been funded throughout the United States. These local programs have been carried out in settings such as schools, community centers, and youth-serving agencies and in both inner-city neighborhoods and isolated rural areas. They have emphasized the development of personal and social skills and the importance of gender and cultural sensitivity, have organized self-help and support groups, and have provided resources and support to family members and other adults who can make a positive difference in young people's lives. The book provides glimpses of the personal side of certain demonstration programs and tells some of the stories of young people whose lives have changed. The book describes what many program grantees have accomplished and identifies common themes of effective programs for young people. An appendix contains program profiles and notes. Photographs
