This report on drug seizures and dispositions for drug offenders in the United Kingdom during 1994 notes that seizures increased by 23 percent over the previous year; the total of 108,000 was the highest ever.
Abstract
Marijuana was involved in 82 percent of the seizures. The number of seizures involving heroin increased by 22 percent, but those of cocaine increased only slightly. Seizures involving amphetamines and marijuana increased 11 percent and 27 percent respectively. Seizures involving LSD declines, but those involving MDMA increased by 50 percent. Drug offenders increased by 25 percent to 87,000 in 1994. Almost 90 percent were drug possession cases, usually marijuana. Drug trafficking cases increased by 8 percent to 11,200. Just over half the offenders were cautioned, under 25 percent were fined, and 7 percent were sentenced to immediate custody. These percentages were similar to those in 1993. The number of confiscation orders increased by 27 percent to 1,250; the amount forfeited increased 160 percent to 25.4 million pounds. Figures, maps, tables, and notes
