Marijuana was involved in 82 percent of the seizures. The number of seizures involving heroin increased by 22 percent, but those of cocaine increased only slightly. Seizures involving amphetamines and marijuana increased 11 percent and 27 percent respectively. Seizures involving LSD declines, but those involving MDMA increased by 50 percent. Drug offenders increased by 25 percent to 87,000 in 1994. Almost 90 percent were drug possession cases, usually marijuana. Drug trafficking cases increased by 8 percent to 11,200. Just over half the offenders were cautioned, under 25 percent were fined, and 7 percent were sentenced to immediate custody. These percentages were similar to those in 1993.
