This video uses narration, dramatization, and graphics to discuss the prevalence, causes, warning signs, and prevention of violence in the workplace.
Abstract
The narrator advises that the workplace is the fastest growing site for violence, and it has become the second leading cause of death while at work. Further, the employer holds primary legal responsibility for ensuring employee safety while at work. A discussion of some causes of violent behavior focuses on environmental factors and personality factors. Environmental factors include a tolerance for violence, the portrayal of violence as a means of resolving conflict, and an oppressive and authoritarian work environment. Personality factors include mental illness, personal crises outside of work, and reliance on the job as a means of maintaining a sense of identity. Warning signs of possible violent behavior are also dramatized. They include verbal threats, reduced productivity, substance abuse, and stalking. Violence in the workplace should be countered by the formation of a formal crisis team that meets regularly and promptly to respond to any reported warning signs of the risk of violence. The team should train and encourage employees to identify the warning signs of violence in other employees and report such observations to the crisis team. Team actions should be based on written policies about employer response to the warning signs of violence manifested by employees. The company should have options that can help at-risk employees receive help to deal with problems; however, employees should understand that aggressive and intimidating threats and behavior will not be tolerated. The video advises that supervisors should be trained in listening and conflict-resolution skills, so as to respond appropriately to employees under stress. Employees should also have clear channels for communicating grievances without fear of recrimination.
