During the past decade, drug testing in the workplace has gone from ground zero to fairly universal acceptance in the business community. In 1983, only 3 percent of employers in the largest 200 U.S. corporations tested one or more job applicant classes; by 1991, this figure rose to 98 percent. Employers have enthusiastically embraced the mission of drug abuse testing and prevention because of the high costs of drug abuse to the business community.
