This 12- to 15-hour staff development program, including four videotapes, offers promising approaches to the prevention of adolescent health and behavior problems.
Abstract
A videotape accompanies each session. The first session of the training outlines the factors that put youth at risk of substance abuse, delinquency, and other behavioral problems. The video describes the protective factors that buffer those risks and presents a model that promotes positive, healthy behaviors in juveniles and operates as a solid foundation for prevention. Session Two focuses on the setting of clear and consistent standards of behavior, including how to communicate consistently effective rules and standards for youth. Session Three provides an introduction to service learning: what it is, how it works, and why it bonds juveniles to their communities, giving them opportunities for personal growth and a sense of belonging. Session Four explores the practical steps for assisting youth to teach their peers. Session Five supplies local information and resources to help participants apply course content to their professional settings. This facilitator's guide provides facilitator information. It contains facilitator pre-training and post-training questionnaires and provides guidance for preparing for the training, implementing the training, and providing guidelines for effective workshops. A major section of the guide also contains sponsor information. Appended promotional materials, two graphics, and four videotapes
