This document reports on rates of automobile theft in England and Wales, as measured by the Car Theft Index.
Abstract
The Index shows the rate at which any given model of car is stolen over a 1-year period in England and Wales. The introductory section reviews the general nature of the problem of car theft, describes the Index, and interprets results shown by the Index. Data were collected for the Index from vehicle parking lots, stolen vehicle police reports. The process for constructing the Car Theft Index consisted of processing the information, producing the indices, categorizing vehicles, and examining improvements in car security. Results are discussed in terms of vehicle park theft figures, the correlation between vehicle age and car theft, and future uses for the Car Theft Index. 3 tables, 9 figures, 3 appendixes, and 10 references
