This manual presents guidelines for 36 weekly workshops to be conducted by classroom teachers to help students in grades four through six develop skills for preventing and resolving conflicts.
Abstract
The workshops last 45 minutes each. They focus on five themes: affirmation, cooperation, communication, bias awareness and appreciation of differences, and creative conflict management. Each theme area has seven workshops. Workshops can be repeated. A final workshop provides a closing activity to bring formal closure to the series. Topics include active listening, brainstorming, conflict management, following directions, using the vocabulary of feelings, friendships, anger, nonverbal communication of feelings, responding to the angry student, a six-step problem-solving process, and the skill of summarizing facts and feelings.
