This report profiles criminal justice projects in North Carolina that have benefitted from Federal formula grant monies in fiscal year 1993.
Abstract
During the Federal fiscal year 1993, North Carolina funded programs in 18 of the 21 authorized program areas. A total of 120 grants were awarded to North Carolina's counties, cities, and State agencies. Although the State is required to pass through approximately 40 percent of the formula grant total, it actually passed through approximately 65 percent to local jurisdictions. Demand-reduction projects statewide have contributed to drug education programs by adding more officers to expand the DARE program. Projects funded under the strategy of multijurisdictional task forces have facilitated collaboration in drug enforcement activities. Community policing was a priority strategy during this reporting period. Projects increased police presence in communities across the State, offered non-English- speaking communities information to reduce fear and build trust between citizens and officers, and provided education and training to community groups involved in community policing. Other projects have contributed to the recovery of stolen property, the revitalization of neighborhoods, career criminal prosecution programs, improved court operation, expanded correctional options, improved criminal justice information systems, programs to reduce school violence, and domestic violence programs. Drug interdiction and alternatives to detention have also been the focus of funded projects. This report summarizes the programs and their achievements, as well as coordination efforts and activities.
