This report describes the programs and activities conducted in Maine from June 1993 through July 1994 under the Drug Control and System Improvement Formula Grant Program established by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988.
Abstract
Maine's strategy contains elements that recognize Maine's rural characteristics and address enforcement, prevention, and criminal justice system enhancement. The rural nature of Maine's population means that many communities lack the resources, technology, and required level of expertise to deal with many problems. However, both drug abuse and violence are problems in Maine. Accomplishments during the year included a unified drug law enforcement effort institutionalized in the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, front line prosecutorial support for multijurisdictional drug enforcement task force activities, a statewide Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program promoting drug demand reduction, and strong interest in community policing throughout the State. Other accomplishments include a corrections improvement program and an Information System Improvement Program. Program descriptions, appended report on drug diagnosis and treatment referral services to offenders
