The strategy aims to achieve this goal through education, demand reduction, and supply reduction. In particular, the focus is on crack cocaine which comes into the Virgin Islands from Puerto Rico, St. Martin, Trinidad, the British Virgin Islands, and South America. Even though marijuana is also imported, many marijuana fields have been eradicated on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Local law enforcement agents report that heroin is readily available on St. Croix, and heroin is often imported from the neighboring islands of Vieques and Puerto Rico. The U.S. Virgin Islands drug control strategy is the result of cooperative efforts involving Federal and local officials. Funding sources used to support drug control activities are described, along with projects conducted as part of the drug control strategy.
