Research projects completed in 1993-95 addressed types of violent crime in the West Midlands, a study of Grendon Prison (a therapeutic prison), the circumstances of and decisions made by offenders in armed robberies, racial incidents in prison, an evaluation of parole, and a text on presentencing stages of the criminal justice system. Current research is addressing the following topics: witnesses with learning disabilities; victimization in prisons; offender assessments and allocation decisions in the Probation Service; social order, criminal justice, and the appeal to community in Britain and Germany; intergenerational differences in experiences of crime, fear of crime, and conceptions of justice; and community supervision of offenders in Warwickshire. Other topics in current research are a worldwide perspective on the death penalty; statutory responses to racially motivated crime in Europe; and a study of Colombian women prisoners in England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. Each of the aforementioned projects is summarized in this report. Information is provided on the new Probation Studies Unit, which was established to conduct long-term research on probation and related practices. Information is also provided on courses taught by members of the Centre, theses of research students, seminars, the Oxford Crime Forum, the library, visiting fellows and scholars, and publications and other activities of members of the Centre.
