Abstract
Statistics on crime address historical trends in crimes reported to police, the rate of increase in recorded crime, type of offense, recent changes in crime, victimization data, changes in crime from 1981 through 1993, and international comparisons on recorded crime and victimization surveys. Statistics on victims encompass the characteristics of property-crime victims, the age and gender of violent-crime victims, victims of rape and homicide, victim support and witness services, victim compensation, and the work of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. Data on offending and offenders covers the prevalence of offending, the age and gender of known offenders, and the peak age of known offenders. Information on police and court action features prosecution statistics, attrition within the criminal justice system, clear-up rates, and cautioning. Other statistics presented pertain to sentencing, prisons and parole, reconvictions, human resources, and expenditures and costs.
