Adopted in 1983, the standards are organized according to the following areas: (1) law enforcement role, responsibilities, and relationships; (2) police organization, management, and administration; (3) personnel structure and processes; (4) law enforcement operations and operations support; (5) traffic operations; (6) prisoner and court-related activities; and (7) auxiliary and technical services. Chapters focus on police agency jurisdiction and regional services, contractual agreements for law enforcement services, police planning and research, crime analysis, police responsibilities, compensation and benefits, work conditions, career development and higher education, collective bargaining, and grievance and disciplinary procedures. Subsequent chapters cover personnel recruitment and selection, training, promotion, performance evaluation, police patrol, criminal investigation, organized crime and vice control, crime prevention, internal affairs, public information and community relations, and traffic law enforcement. Final chapters address prisoner transportation, court security, communications, recordkeeping, evidence collection and preservation, and property management.
