The 45 juvenile court circuits disposed of 77,460 referrals during the year, a 1-percent decrease over the 5 years since 1990 and a 6-percent increase over 1993. Males accounted for 68 percent of all referrals; white youth made up 67 percent of the referral population. Fifty-three percent of the referrals accounted for 53 percent of referrals, and juvenile status offenses increased 42 percent from 1993 to a total of 21,458. From 1985 to 1994, law violation referrals increased 28 percent, while child abuse, neglect, and custody referrals increased 53 percent. Sixty-eight percent of the referrals came from police; more than half of the abuse, neglect, and custody referrals came from the Department of Social Services' Division of Family Services.
