An international police executive symposium held in Geneva, Switzerland brought together representatives from 10 police agencies to discuss contemporary challenges to policing and strategies for responding to them.
Abstract
Participants came from Austria, Brazil, France, Hungary, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Participants represented almost all models of policing in the world. The major issues of concern included fear of crime; criminal violence, especially youth violence; drugs and drug-related crimes; police brutality; police corruption, the politicalization of police; and human rights violation by the police. Police in various countries have developed their own strategies to address these issues. Organizational and social structures seem to shape the police commanders' views of police issues and problems. All police agencies are concerned about violence and drugs. Some places apparently experience much excessive force and corruption, while others do not. Table, note, and 16 references
