This volume is not meant to be a textbook on child abuse, but a guide to the best available information and an aid to find that information. The definitions included are in layperson's terms, and there is a glossary of medical terms. Each chapter begins with a list of basic references. A discussion of the basic knowledge in the field follows, with extensive references at the end of each chapter. In areas where there is controversy, articles on both sides of the issue are referenced. There is information on 21 knowledge areas on the subject of physical abuse, including: (1) epidemiology and risk factors; (2) components of a complete physical examination in child abuse cases; (3) requirements for accurate and usable photodocumentation; (4) legal requirements for chart documentation; and (5) common patterns of various child abuse injuries. Knowledge areas fundamental to the evaluation of sexual abuse are covered in 18 sections, including: (1) epidemiology and risk factors; (2) signs and symptoms; (3) psychological effects; (4) changes in sexual abuse trauma that occur with healing over time; and (5) principles of forensic examination and specimen collection.
