Thirteen papers discuss issues that reflect discussions and viewpoints expressed by conference participants. A number of papers focus on the different criteria used for the juvenile justice system's intervention for female juveniles compared to male juveniles. Young women involved in the welfare system who manifest behavioral problems are at particular risk for punitive intervention, even when their behavior does not rise to the level of criminality. Further, aggressive behavior by young women is apparently less tolerated than with male juveniles, both by police and juvenile corrections staff. Papers emphasize not only tailoring programs to the distinctive needs of young women in general but also the needs of particular groups of women, such as Aboriginal young women. Other issues discussed in the paper are an alternative program model for custodial services for young women, the involvement of young women in community service orders, a community response to young mothers' and young women's experience of violence, and young women in the Australian vocational training system.
