The AIDS Risk Reduction Model (ARRM) is a conceptual model designed to explain the influence of knowledge and attitudes about AIDS/HIV on risk-related behaviors, and the influence of primary ARRM concepts (labeling, commitment, and enactment) on knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors of high-risk adolescents is explored.
Abstract
Data were collected from 393 adolescents incarcerated in juvenile detention facilities. The survey included questions and statements designed to elicit information on factual knowledge about and attitudes toward AIDS/HIV, AIDS-related behaviors such as drug use and sexual practices, and socio-demographic status. Ordered probit and ordinary least squares analyses were conducted to determine which of several independent variables had the most impact on ARRM acceptance. Results indicated the ARRM was an effective construct for understanding factors that influence AIDS risk avoidance. In addition, findings showed that previous life experiences should be formally integrated into the model and that specific forms of enactment are associated with different factors. Suggestions are offered on how the ARRM may be used to promote behavioral change among high-risk adolescents. 33 references, 4 notes, and 4 tables
