The first six recommendations focus on basic skills such as loving and spending time with their children, teaching them by word and example to be cooperative and nonviolent, reporting any suspected child abuse, and becoming an advocate for all children. Additional recommendations focus on actions to take at home. These include ensuring appropriate supervision for children, teaching children basic safety rules, and not keeping guns in the home. Recommendations for neighborhood actions include knowing the neighbors, working with them to make the neighborhood a better place for children, and choosing a secret safety word that only the child knows. Other recommendations focus on school and community actions such as creating a neighborhood parenting circle, helping children use television responsibly, and urging elected officials to support efforts that prevent youth violence.
