Abstract
Chapter 1 presents an overview of homelessness in the United States, including a discussion of the risk of child abuse and neglect among homeless families. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect as well as reporting requirements when abuse or neglect is suspected. Chapter 3 delineates the complex needs of families and children and describes a variety of programs that have been implemented to address these needs. Chapter 4 discusses the importance of collaborative, community-based service delivery for families and children. Each chapter features a number of program highlights. These highlights are examples of what agencies across the country are currently doing to address the specific needs of homeless families and children. Some program highlights also include a section that lists informational materials appropriate for shelter staff as well as residents. Each chapter also contains a series of worksheets that should be used by shelter staff to develop their own community-based annotated resource guide to services for families and children. Appended list of national resources, a bibliography, and an annotated reading list
