Elderly persons are the most law-abiding citizens in the community and can be persuasive promoters of programs or problem-solving efforts. The component of Triad most linked to community policing is the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) Council. The SALT Council acts as a citizen advisory group to the sheriff of chief of police concerning issues to be addressed on behalf of the elderly. They can also offer advice on community-wide issues and give insights on problemsolving based on their years of experience and wisdom. This partnership between senior citizens and the police can help police administrators reduce erroneous perceptions and information and help improve strategies for dealing with community problems. Proper selection, training, and supervision of the senior volunteers are crucial elements to the success of Triad and community policing.
