These programs are among 15 programs funded by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control. They are based on the concept that violence prevention approaches must be both diverse and scientific. The programs use four types of strategies: individual interventions, interventions directed to families and peers, interventions directed toward social groups and organizations such as schools and neighborhoods, and macrosystem interventions directed at issues such as firearm availability or media exposure. Most projects use several strategies. The most common strategies were cognitive-behavioral training and social skills training. Participation rates at baseline ranged from 41 percent to 91 percent. Intervention and comparison groups were similar demographically, psychosocially, and behaviorally. Exposure to violent events and violent behavior was common.
