Abstract
The report is produced annually by the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Statistical Analysis Center, and the primary data source is the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting program. The report indicates 30 police officers were killed in the line of duty between 1986 and 1995, an average of 3 police officers killed on an annual basis; 17 or 56.7 percent were killed by felonious acts and 13 or 43.3 percent were killed due to accidents or negligence. Of the 17 killed by felonious acts, 15 or 88.2 percent were killed by firearms and 2 were killed by vehicles. In 1995, no police officers were killed feloniously, but one was accidentally killed in the line of duty. The number of reported police officer assaults in 1995 totaled 2,291, and 22.5 percent resulted in injury. Law enforcement agencies reported 15,149 persons were employed on a full-time basis in 1995; 71.7 percent were sworn police officers and 28.3 percent were civilians. In 1995, Missouri had 2.1 sworn police officers per 1,000 population on a statewide basis. Tables and figures
