A summit was hosted by the American Bar Association in December 1993 in Washington, DC, to draw attention to problems facing the civil justice system.
Abstract
Summit goals were to identify problems in the civil justice system and to make specific recommendations on how to correct the problems. Summit participants reached broad consensus that the civil justice system is too slow, too expensive, and not accessible to many Americans. Working groups proposed reforms related to early settlement, case management, and discovery and trial, but participants did not agree on all proposals. The summit had less consensus on specific approaches and more consensus on directions. Appendixes contain additional information on restoring faith in the civil justice system and on the summit program and participants.
