The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) sponsored two sessions of its 20-hour Disaster Preparedness Training Course. In addition, FSA's Task Force, which was involved in statewide antidrug efforts and efforts to bring to justice deadbeat, non-custodial parents, provided a framework for the collaborative efforts required for disaster preparedness programs. The statewide response plan developed by and for Florida's sheriffs addresses many areas of concern: (1) definition of terms; (2) statutory duties and responsibilities of participating Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies; (3) duties and responsibilities of agencies requesting assistance and those lending assistance; and (4) a commitment from each sheriff allowing up to 5 percent of his agency's sworn personnel for emergency response, troops which must be fully equipped and self-contained (with food, water, and shelter) for a minimum assignment of five days at a time.
