Kentucky's Cabinet for Human Resources (CHR) handles drug treatment programs for juveniles through the Division of Substance Abuse within the Department of Mental Health; the CHR contracts with 14 community mental health centers (CMHC's) to provide drug treatment to juveniles.
Abstract
The 14 CMHC's have 47 beds available for drug treatment, and most CMHC staff hold at least a bachelor's degree. All CHR facilities for committed public and youthful offenders have drug treatment programs, and CHR estimates that 90 percent of committed juveniles have had some significant exposure to drugs and alcohol. The CMHC's employ several treatment strategies, including assessment, treatment planning, matching the person with the appropriate treatment, outpatient services, residential treatment, and detoxification. All committed juveniles receive drug and alcohol education, and treatment also includes group, individual, and family counseling. Drug treatment may be sought for juveniles with or without a commitment to CHR. A brief description of the 14 CMHC programs is included.
