Materials are presented for a workshop designed to increase awareness and develop an understanding of the principles of effective intervention and to learn to apply these principles in dealing with offenders.
Abstract
The workshop intends to help participants identify and discuss the goals of corrections, explore the empirical basis for correctional interventions in managing risk and promoting public safety, examine the implications of these interventions for correctional management and programs, and develop strategies for applying the principles in dealing with offenders. The first section of materials provides an overview of treatment effectiveness, the principles of effective intervention with offenders, and programmatic and non-programmatic aspects of successful intervention. Contemporary sentencing policies and community corrections are discussed in the second section. Section III contains materials that examine what works in community corrections, risk-needs assessment and treatment, risk prediction in criminal justice, and the validation of risk- assessment instruments used in community corrections. Section IV provides guidelines for service development and implementation for programs for abusive men. Section V, which contains supplementary material, focuses on intensive rehabilitation supervision and classification for effective rehabilitation.
