The Western Region Jail Association is discussed in terms of its history and activities.
Abstract
The organization was founded 15 years ago as the Western Region Chief Correctional Officers' Association in Virginia. In 1994 it changed its name and opened meetings and membership to all jail personnel. Annual dues are $2. The Association's purpose is to share knowledge and better communicate with surrounding jurisdictions. The quarterly meetings are held in conjunction with training. Nonmembers can attend the training sessions. The jails in the region have average daily populations ranging from 5 or less to more than 500. In August 1995 the Association is sponsoring a Vendors Fair. The training at the February meeting focused on recognizing drug abuse behavior, recognizing mental health problems, and dealing with them. In April 1995 the association and the Virginia Department of Corrections sponsored a training conference for jail cooks. The support and assistance of the Virginia Department of Corrections regional office in Roanoke, Va. have helped the Association succeed. It has also received support from the Bob Barker Corporation, which provided a scholarship for an individual to attend the American Jail Association Conference. The Association plans to grow and to continue to provide training. It is also exploring ideas for additional activities. Photographs
