On May 15, police agencies in the United States and Canada will honor police officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty by observing Peace Officers Memorial Day. Police Week activities, from May 11 to May 17, will note the ongoing contributions of all law enforcement personnel. These occasions afford the public a chance to thank police officers for their difficult and often dangerous efforts. They also provide an opportunity for enhancing police/community relations. The model proclamation for Police Week, which was composed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, is followed by suggestions for organizing Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day Observances. Among suggestions for activities are an "open house" for police facilities, mall police demonstrations and exhibits, school assembly programs, and a parade. Suggestions for publicity and planning are also included. An appeal for support for the National Law Enforcement Memorial is followed by a paper on support services for officers' survivors. Police agencies' responsibilities to survivors are suggested for at the hospital and during the wake and funeral. Other topics addressed in this paper are the provision of information and assistance on benefits, continued follow-up, and awaiting trial.
