Disproportionate Representation of Minorities in the Juvenile Justice System: An Annotated Bibliography

NCJ Number

Date Published
1996
Length
69 pages
Annotation
This annotated bibliography presents 168 studies that have examined the disproportionate representation of minorities in the juvenile justice system and the reasons for it.
Abstract
The studies range over a period from the 1970's through 1995. Many of the studies examined differences in systemic decisionmaking in the course of juvenile processing based on race. Some focused on specific decisionmaking points, such as detention and disposition. Most studies sought to isolate the comparative influences of legal and extra-legal variables in juvenile justice decisionmaking, with attention to race as an extra-legal variable.
