This chapter examines the problem of school violence by defining the problem, discussing its prevalence, addressing its prevention, and reviewing the efficacy of existing programs designed to combat it.
Abstract
The chapter presents information in the following categories: (1) defining school violence; (2) the prevalence of school violence; (3) what can be done about school violence; and (4) promising violence prevention programs for youth. Prevention of violence will result only from comprehensive efforts across the full range of societal institutions, an approach entitled Comprehensive Social Competence and Health Education. It highlights the synergy that results from a focus on enhancing students' health and social competence through coordinated intervention strategies at both the person/small group and organizational/environmental levels. Such a program begins with early family interventions and continues into the schools, which provide an important and accessible base for the engagement of youth in prosocial activities and preparation for responsible citizenship and involvement in family, workplace, and community. The chapter includes discussion questions based on the information presented. Figures, references
