Because California police departments must maintain good relations with a wide variety of racial and ethnic groups, a study was conducted using the Lodi Police Department to assess the relationship between the Hispanic community and rural California law enforcement by the year 2006.
Abstract
Interviews were conducted with professionals from Lodi's Hispanic community to obtain information on how law enforcement could ensure Hispanic concerns were heard and addressed, types of educational programs needed to enhance the relationship between the police and the Hispanic community, and steps the police could take in terms of recruitment and training to enhance the relationship with the Hispanic community. Strategic planning and analysis indicated that power structures within individual communities will shift in response to changing demographics in California; that police departments must find new approaches; and that the establishment of an advisory committee to act as liaison between the police and the Hispanic community is important in opening lines of communication. 12 endnotes
