This paper describes the achievements of Slovenia's Ministry of the Interior (MI) library, with attention to its being an international focal point for research findings pertinent to the police and related sciences in Central and Eastern Europe.
Abstract
The MI library is designed to meet the information requirements of a special group of clients: the professionals, the researchers, and the administrative personnel of the MI, police, teaching staff, and students. In 1992 the MI library implemented a computer-assisted librarian information system. The MI library has also become a member of the Slovenian cooperative online bibliographical system and services called COBISS. This permits online shared cataloging of monographs, articles, and other documents; access to databases; and the automation of local functions. After discussing the information activities of the library and the expansion of its services, this paper addresses issues related to the integration of the MI library into the international information exchange. This includes a proposal for the establishment of a regional coordination unit. The proposal envisions a data distribution system that complies with uniform standards, with the possibility of searching a central database. The central regional database could be accessible through the Internet. 10 notes
