The Prison Personnel Training Center in Finland is described in terms of its philosophy, programs, and role as the only Finnish institution that provides training for professional correctional personnel.
Abstract
The training is based on the principles of inmate treatment based on inmate needs. Correctional personnel must be 18 years old and have either a senior secondary school diploma or a vocational examination. A basic examination qualifies individuals for prison work. Introductory training provides basic information about Finnish criminal law, criminal policy, the prison service, and prisoners and discusses the civil servant's responsibilities. Special training is designed to qualify personnel of other government agencies to become correctional personnel. The prison service examination qualifies students for supervisory and senior positions. Each year the training center publishes 5-10 textbooks that focus on the treatment of prisoners from the prisoners' and workers' perspectives. A library supports research, training, and planning in the correctional system. Tables and photographs
