Online education is the broad term for any kind of course that is transmitted over the Internet or over an organization's internal Intranet. Participation in online education does not require much specialized equipment; many correctional agencies already connected to the Internet have the equipment necessary for online courses. Given the proper staff training and monitoring and compliance with established Internet use policies and procedures, both inmates and staff can benefit from online courses in postsecondary education and job-related information and technology. The Corrections Connection Network is devoted specifically to corrections, offering several services such as the Education Network and Student Center, which will offer online courses in criminal justice and links to the Correctional Education Association and to all colleges and universities that offer criminal justice programs.
