Abstract
On Saturday, May 11, 1996, ValuJet Flight 592 crashed into the Florida Everglades approximately 17 miles northwest of Miami International Airport. The crash site was within the geographical jurisdiction of the Metro-Dade Police and Fire Rescue departments. The Metro-Dade Police Department participated also, working in concert with numerous Federal, State, and local public and private agencies. Both police and fire department personnel established command posts, one of which became the temporary work site for more than 120 recovery workers each day. Police commanders also established perimeter sites to prevent unauthorized access, and a police dive team searched for survivors. The National Transportation Safety Board team from Washington were the lead investigators, and coordinated the efforts of all participating agencies. The article describes the integrated recovery plan, safety issues, managing the crisis, record keeping, media relations, and financing recovery efforts for the ValuJet operation and other major disasters.
