This article describes efforts by Canadian law enforcement agencies to detect and deter crimes committed on the Internet.
Abstract
The article describes some of the most common offenses being committed on the Internet; defines the role of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other law enforcement agencies in the investigation of these cases; and identifies the related legal and investigative issues confronting the law enforcement community. The article also makes recommendations that will assist the police and the public in their collective efforts to deal with this type of crime, including: (1) cooperation between countries, reciprocal agreements in matters of investigation and prosecution; (2) consultations among the police, legislators and Internet service providers concerning what material is offensive and should be removed; (3) development of software programs that can monitor Internet use and block out undesirable material; and (4) basic training for the police in computers and information services and consideration of establishing Internet police posts where police could monitor and receive complaints of criminal activity via the Internet.
