Sex offenders generate strong negative feelings among the public. However, sex offenders vary widely. The majority of rapists appear to be traditional macho males. Rapists who appear to require violence and victim degradation for their satisfaction are usually strangers to their victims; they are rare compared to acquaintance and date rapists. Treatment of rapists in community corrections should center around discussions of sex roles, images of women, and the victim experience. Violent rapists are usually imprisoned and need more intense and specialized treatment, usually administered by psychiatrists and psychologists. Child molesters are usually weak and lonely individuals. True pedophiles are rare. The treatment of child molesters is best accomplished within specialized child sexual abuse clinics.
