Powerful Partnerships offers programs, ideas, techniques, and models to create successful law enforcement-refugee partnerships in the community; the programs include keeping youth in school and out of gangs and overcoming barriers between authorities and refugees to improve family communication.
Abstract
The profiles of programs in Powerful Partnerships not only describe program activities but also highlight techniques and strategies that can be broadly applied. The focus is on working with law enforcement and refugees, involving young people and their families, targeting community needs, locating and using resources effectively, helping youth develop skills to help themselves, and developing and sustaining culturally diverse partnerships. The need to form collaborative partnerships between law enforcement and refugees is discussed, and stereotypes commonly held by law enforcement personnel and refugees are examined. Four key steps to successful crime prevention programs are identified: (1) find collaborative partners; (2) assess needs; (3) determine existing assets and resources; and (4) develop an action plan. Twenty successful partnership programs are described, and each program profile covers structure, staffing, activities, partners, and resources. An index of key program elements and an extensive list of resources are included to help other communities develop, improve, and sustain their programs. 8 photographs
