Length of time in custody is presented according to various legal-history criteria such as commitment offense, felony class category of commitment offense, minimum sentence length, and maximum sentence length. In addition, several tables show trends in length of stay across the years 1991 through 1995. There were 33,000 total releases from facilities during 1995. Of these, 17,558 were inmates released to parole supervision for the first time on the current sentence. Of the first releases to parole supervision in 1995, 31 percent were committed for legislatively designated violent felony offenses, 6 percent for other violent/coercive offenses, 46 percent for drug offenses, 14 percent for property and other types of offenses, and 3 percent as youthful offenders. The average time served in New York State correctional facilities for the 17,558 first releases to parole supervision was 27.2 months. The average total time served in custody for the first releases to parole supervision in 1995 was 32.7 months. The average total time served in custody for a first felony offender was 29.3 months. The average total time served in custody for persons sentenced as a second felony offender was 35.5 months. The average total time served for violent felony offenders increased from 42.4 months in 1991 to 46.9 months in 1995, and the average total time served for property offenders was stable at approximately 22 months from 1991 to 1995. 38 tables and 7 figures
