This article examines provision of a secure workplace for taxi drivers through the use of various forms of technology.
Abstract
Research suggests that taxi drivers are exposed to both financial and physical risk as part of their occupation, in part because of the 24-hour availability of cabs and their ubiquitous spread from metropolitan areas to isolated country roads. But such risks are closely related to the economic rewards of an industry which is characterized by accessibility and flexibility. Situational crime-prevention measures, such as screens, video cameras and global positioning systems, are often touted as solutions which can reduce the risk to drivers while maintaining the rewards to the industry as a whole. This article reports on a population survey of taxi drivers in Victoria developed to explore possibilities of providing a secure workplace for the taxi diver through the use of various forms of technology. Analysis suggests that a number of hurdles must be overcome before technologic solutions can be usefully implemented. Tables, references
