Statistics indicate the average number of offenders incarcerated in Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions and private contracted beds in May 1996 totaled 25,070, a 0.45-percent increase over the average inmate population of 24,957 in custody in April 1996 and a 10.2-percent increase over the average inmate population of 22,657 in custody in May 1995.
Abstract
In May 1996, 24,459 inmates were housed in State facilities having a base capacity of 16,166; the DOC was thus operating at 151.3 percent of capacity. In the case of detention centers, Nottoway Detention Center opened in May 1996 and had an average daily population of 12, while Southampton Detention Center had an average daily population of 141. Both detention centers had a total base capacity of 200. Detailed data are tabulated on the average daily population at major correctional facilities between July 1994 and May 1996 and on the number of inmates in field units and work release units, the number of inmates in work centers and detention centers, and the number of inmates in pre-release centers as of May 1996. 4 tables and 1 figure
