This 1995-96 Annual Report of the Florida Parole Commission reviews the Commission's workload as well as the specific achievements and data of the offices that compose the Commission.
Abstract
The rapid construction of prison beds continued throughout the year. The Commission, along with the Florida sheriffs, police chiefs, and many other members of the criminal justice system had encouraged the construction of new beds to avoid the early release of inmates. As a result, the Commission streamlined and revised its review process, since it was evident that releases through the Control Release Program were no longer necessary. The legislature, at the request of the Commission, further revised the program by eliminating the statutorily required reviews. The Commission intensified its review of domestic violence issues in revocation hearings. The Commission supports a proactive policy and attempts to maintain a stable and safe environment for the family and the community. The 1996 legislative session adopted a bill that provides for a reorganization of the Parole Commission, resulting in a 27-percent reduction in staff and a reduction in the Commission membership from seven to three. Data on the Commission's workload and finances are provided.
