A conference on the need to establish a medical research agenda for child sexual abuse was convened in May 1997 to identify research priorities in specific areas relevant to child sexual abuse.
Abstract
The conference was sponsored by the Collaboration for Research on the Sexual Abuse of Children and included approximately 50 participants from a variety of Federal agencies and private foundations. The opening address noted the importance of a medical research policy agenda for the child abuse and neglect field, reviewed medical research directions in child sexual abuse, and suggested potential future areas in child sexual abuse for physicians and other health care professionals. Subsequent conference presentations considered epidemiological aspects of child sexual abuse, triage and referral for child sexual abuse medical examinations, behavioral manifestations of child sexual abuse, medical consequences of child sexual abuse, technical conduct of child sexual abuse medical examinations, children's responses to medical examinations, normal anogenital anatomy, anogenital trauma, sexually transmitted diseases in children who have been sexually abused, and emotional and forensic impacts of child sexual abuse medical examinations. Discussions followed each conference presentation, and the conference produced a total of 66 medical research priorities. References
